Interpreter of Maladies shows postmodernism through miscommunication and unclear relationships, especially between Mr Kapasi and Mrs Das. This story also ends without resolution and highlights how human relationships are often complicated . Throughout the story, Mrs Das and Mr Kapasi suffer from guilt, fear, and failure.

Mrs Das and Mr Kapasi both feel different types of guilt and dissatisfaction, and those feelings truly prevent them from connecting with each other or their families. Mrs Das feels guilty about her affair and secretly confesses, "I have a confession to make".(Lahari). She was feeling guilty, so she thought it was the right time to say it. Another place where Mrs Das feels guilty is when she tells him about the kids when she says, "none of my children are yours."(Lahari). Over the time of hiding it, she built up so much guilt that she couldn't stay quiet and then ended up just saying it out loud to him because the longer she kept it, she would have just ruined herself. Mr Kapasi started to feel guilty, which made a lot of his personal health and mindset change when he said, "he felt suddenly tired of his job" (Lahari). This shows him starting to think and care more about the situation. Shortly after the confession, he also says, "I feel terrible looking at my children"(Lahari). Although they are strangers, they both feel guilty about similar situations because of how the guilt is affecting them.

Fear plays a major role in how both characters avoid reality. Mrs Das fears judgment, which is why she hides her secret for years and then finally reveals it cautiously to Mr Kapasi just to ease her guilt. Similarly, Mr Kapasi fears his own unhappiness, admitting he and his wife"had a little in common except their children"(Lahari). Instead of controlling it, he escapes into a fantasy about Ms Das. Lahari shows that fear keeps both characters from telling the truth.

Both characters also experience failure, especially in communication and understanding. Mr Kapasi misreads Mrs Das's intentions, and when he realizes the truth, "The illusion he had harbored suddenly vanished"(Lahari). Mrs Das fails as a mother, shown when she neglects her children, leading to Bobby being attacked by monkeys. Mr Kapasi's failure is also symbolized when Mrs Das's paper with his address "slipped away in the wind "(Lahari). Representing a lost connection.

Overall, Lahari uses guilt fear to show how personal flaws and misinterpretation lead to isolation, providing that honesty is necessary and meaningful for meaningful relationships to work out. She also shows inside the story that fear, guilt, and failure can change how someone is towards themselves and also towards others who are important in their life.
